Statement of Governor Bob McDonnell on Alpha Natural Resources Acquisition of Massey Energy Company

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today regarding the acquisition of Massey Energy Company by Alpha Natural Resources.

"Alpha Natural Resources is a leading Virginia company, employing thousands of our citizens and possessing a well-earned reputation for safety on the job and positive involvement in the communities in which it operates. Following this acquisition, Alpha Natural Resources will become the nation's largest supplier of metallurgical coal for the production of steel globally, owning 110 mines and approximately 5 billion tons of coal reserves. Alpha and Massey have operated in the same areas for years. That proximity will lead to beneficial cost-savings and new efficiencies in future operations as one company. Coal keeps our lights on, and it powers America. This acquisition is good news for the economy of Southwest Virginia and the entire Commonwealth."
