Renew Virginia Green Jobs Initiative

On December 11th, 2008, Governor Kaine announced his Renew Virginia initiative, which will include legislative and executive actions to make Virginia a leader in energy conservation and efficiency and protecting the environment.  Click here to read the Governor's news release. 


Immediately preceding the announcement, The Governor met with his economic development team and 10 leading firms in energy technologies on what Virginia needs to do to position itself as a nationally and internationally recognized state for attracting and growing green energy technologies. As part of the Renew Virginia initiative, the Governor announced the following actions:

  • Under the leadership of Secretary of Commerce and trade Patrick O. Gottschalk, an Interagency Task Force for Energy Project Recruitment will work with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to build Virginia's compelling case for renewable energy-related businesses. The task force will include state agencies, university research centers, and federal laboratories based in Virginia.
     
  • The initial meeting for the task force is scheduled for January 23rd, 2009.

  • The Governor has tasked VEDP with assembling an aggressive marketing plan for promoting Virginia's business case for new investments and employment generating projects in renewable energy production and energy efficiency projects.  In addition to assisting the Governor with key legislative and executive initiatives to attract major investment in Virginia, VEDP will work with the interagency task force over the next few months to develop this marketing plan for release in the spring.
As part of the Renew Virginia legislative package, the Governor's Green Jobs legislation, announced on January 12, 2009 includes:
  • Clean Energy Manufacturing Incentive
  • Biofuels Incentive Grant
  • Renewable Energy System Income Tax Credits
  • Renewable Energy Equipment Sales Tax Exemption
